Resident Spotlight: Neville Graham – Life in the Fast Lane

From his first race at just 16 years old, Neville Graham has always had a passion for speed. Born with a competitive spirit and a love for motorcycles, Neville’s life has taken him from the roar of the Sydney Speedway to a peaceful retirement on the Central Coast, with plenty of stories in between.

Neville grew up in Sydney and went to Homebush High, where he’d often watch the races at the speedway and dream of being on the track himself. That dream came true in 1950 when, in a twist of fate, he was given the chance to race at the Sydney Sports Ground after world champion Lionel Van Praag withdrew. It was the start of something lifelong. “My feet were off the ground, the throttle was revved and I never stopped from then on,” Neville recalls.

He raced all over New South Wales — from the Sydney Showground to Westmead (now the site of the hospital), Bathurst, and Mount Druitt. Riding mostly Hondas, Kawasakis, and Yamahas, his favourite bike was a Norton. He has a soft spot for the Featherbed frame, known for its superior suspension. Neville’s machines ran on JA Prestwich engines and good old castor oil — a blend that brought both speed and endurance to the track.

But his love of bikes wasn’t just limited to racing. He rode them to work, too, practical, affordable, and a thrill to ride. Over the years, Neville held many jobs: forklift driver helping build motorcycles, Commonwealth Bank driver in Sydney, motor mechanic, and apprentice on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. He even worked at North Sydney Club as a barman and steward in the bistro.

Neville retired with his beloved wife in 1997 and settled in Woy Woy. After her passing, he moved to Cooinda Village and is now a much-valued resident at Peninsula Villages. A foundation member of the Central Coast Mariners, Neville remains full of pride for the life he’s lived and the adventures he’s had.

Whether he was behind the handlebars or behind the bar, Neville’s life has always been about connection, momentum, and living without hesitation.
