Coronavirus CEO Update – 16 March 2020

As you are aware, the global Coronavirus outbreak is an evolving situation with more cases coming to light both in Australia and globally daily.

The World Health Organization has now declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Peninsula Villages recognises the importance of putting in place active measures to ensure that the risk to consumers of contracting or transmitting the virus in our residential care homes, independent living settings is carefully managed.

We will continue to prepare for Coronavirus as well as the upcoming influenza season.

Peninsula Villages has established a COVID-19 plan ready to be implemented should this virus or any other virus infect any of our residents in care and independent living units. We may commence some infection control process in the interim such as enforcing hand sanitiser on entry to the facility and at meal times.

We have briefed all Managers on what to do and how to act quickly should something occur, so to protect all our residents and staff. In a residential care context this may include isolation of infected residents, movement to different rooms or areas of the building, cancellation of services or group activities and restricting access to residential care homes to outside visitors. These measures will be continually reviewed with a focus on keeping people well and safe and reducing the spread which we have always done when the facility has had a virus in the past.

We have updated our infection control training and staff will be undergoing additional education on COVID-19 shortly including competencies on hand hygiene. As in the past all staff will be offered free flu vaccines and of course our residents. All staff will also have access to the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) should an outbreak occur.

The best form of response is prevention; therefore we will continue to remind everyone of these key practices which can help contain the spread of a virus.

Vaccinations for the flu- we strongly encourage as many clients and staff as possible to get their flu vaccinations when available.

For our residents in care, we will be arranging flu clinics in the coming weeks once the vaccination is available. Please also remember to:

  • Practice good hand hygiene – PLEASE wash your hands thoroughly and use soap or hand gel where provided
  • If you feel unwell isolate yourself and inform staff or contact your GP, Health Direct on 1800 022 222 (for out of hours support) or emergency services
  • Also cough or sneeze into your arm
  • sanitiser

The Department of Health is leading Australia’s response and developing recommendations for Aged Care Providers and we will continue to work closely with them to implement strong measures to protect our residents and clients.
