Over the last year, Peninsula Villages has partnered with NDIS employment specialist, breakthru, to help develop career skills and goals for young adults with disabilities.
The latest graduate from Peninsula Villages program, Shah McPherson, has worked at Peninsula Villages for just over 12 months, helping and caring for residents of the village.
It emerged as one of those pleasant surprises, one of those unexpected gifts of life. When Shah turned up at Peninsula Village with an intention to open up the modern world of the internet, and the infinite opportunities it offers, to the elderly residents inside coming to terms with a rapidly changing world.
Yet, along with helping those in the Village, something else happened. Shah's world also opened up.
The confidence Shah gained from engaging with residents and leading technology and computer classes has led him to securing a job that he begins next year.
It was a rewarding experience for both parties, Peninsula Village Chief Executive Officer, Shane Neaves said.
"The residents have really enjoyed working with him and Shah has imparted so much knowledge to our team and residents," said Shane.
Shah’s placement was part of a joint initiative between Peninsula Village and breakthru where he joined the Leisure and Lifestyle team to assist with resident activities and events.
Breakthru employee Grant Tomkins attributed Shah's success on the job front to his social development at Peninsula Village and the growth he experienced leading the computer education classes, held each Thursday for residents wanting to learn the basics.
Shah began working with Peninsula through his involvement with breakthru, resulting in a win-win situation for all involved.
“The partnership between Peninsula Villages and breakthru with Shah this year has been hugely successful and breakthru are now on the lookout for someone to replace Shah at the Village to continue the good work Shah has begun,” he added.
“We are incredibly excited Shah secured employment next year and wish him all the best in his next role,” concluded Shane.
